
Nicole Kidman (Actor)
Born to Australian parents in Honolulu, Hawaii, Nicole Kidman grew up in Sydney, Australia, where she began acting as a teenager.
She racked up roles in made-for-television films and miniseries before debuting in the lead role of Dead Calm (1989). She moved to the United States after being offered the role of Dr. Claire Lewicki in Days of Thunder (1990). She went on to appear in Billy Bathgate (1991), To Die For (1995), The Portrait of a Lady (1996), Sir David Hare’s play The Blue Room (1998) and Stanley Kubrick’s final film Eyes Wide Shut (1999).
The new millennium brought her Satine in Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge! (2001) and her first Oscar nomination. She won an Oscar for portraying Virginia Woolf in 2003’s The Hours. More films included Cold Mountain (2003), Margot at the Wedding (2007) and The Golden Compass adapted from Philip Pullman’s fantasy novel. She worked with Luhrmann again for Australia (2008), and she appeared in the 2009 musical Nine alongside Daniel Day-Lewis, Penélope Cruz and Marion Cotillard.
Still more films leading up to today included her Oscar-nominated Rabbit Hole (2010), Just Go With It (2011), Trespass(2011), Hemingway & Gellhorn (2012), Paperboy (2012) and The Railway Man (2013). She played the villain in Paddington (2014), and her next Oscar nomination was for Lion, in which she starred as Sue Brierley. Her next Oscar nom was for her portrayal of Lucille Ball in Being the Ricardos.
Recent television credits for Kidman include Big Little Lies, for which she won two Emmys and Nine Perfect Strangers as well as Netflix’s The Perfect Couple. Her next film is A24’s Babygirl. Kidman was married to actor Tom Cruise for 11 years starting in 1990. Cruise filed for divorce in 2001. She has been married to country singer and fellow Australian Keith Urban since 2006, and they share two daughters — Sunday and Faith — in addition to Kidman’s children with Cruise — Bella and Connor.
