A24 has unveiled the first trailer for Death of a Unicorn, its zany horror comedy starring Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega, which hits theaters this spring.
Marking the directorial debut of Alex Scharfman, who also penned the script, the film watches as a father (Rudd) and daughter (Ortega) accidentally hit and kill a unicorn while en route to a weekend retreat, where his billionaire boss (Richard E. Grant) seeks to exploit the creature’s miraculous curative properties. Unfortunately, the unicorn has loved ones who are now out for blood.
Co-financed by A24 and Ley Line Entertainment, Death of a Unicorn also stars Will Poulter, Téa Leoni, Anthony Carrigan, Sunita Mani, and Jessica Hynes. Producers included Scharfman, Drew Houpt and Lucas Joaquin of Secret Engine, Tyler Campellone and Lars Knudsen of Square Peg, and Tim Headington and Theresa Steele Page of Ley Line Entertainment. Exec producers are Ari Aster, Michael Williams, Jacob Epstein, David Darby, Nate Kamiya, Rudd and Ortega. Also of note is the score, which Halloween‘s John Carpenter penned along with his son, Cody Carpenter, and Daniel Davies.
Coming off the December 6 release of Kyle Mooney’s disaster comedy Y2K, A24 next releases a pair of awards contenders — Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist and Halina Reijn’s Babygirl — on December 20 and 25, respectively. At present, the studio has a lot to answer for when it comes to release dates in 2025, as numerous high-profile projects, including Death of a Unicorn, remain undated. Other titles not yet dated include Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland’s Warfare, which just unveiled a first trailer; Ayo Edebiri’s Sundance-bound horror pic Opus; David Lowery’s Mother Mary; Celine Song’s Materialists; the Tim Robinson-Paul Rudd comedy Friendship; and Benny Safdie’s The Smashing Machine starring Dwayne Johnson, among others.
